Market capitalisation rises further by N5b on the Exchange

TRADING on the Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE), was on the upbeat yesterday, occasioned by heavy transactions in the stocks of some highly capitalised companies, thus causing market indices to rise slightly by N5 billion.

Turnover volume however, witnessed a downturn, as 297.2 million shares, valued at N2 billion was exchanged in 7,349 deals, down from 300.2 million units, worth N2.2 billion, recorded in 6,586 deals on Monday.

Specifically, at close of transactions yesterday, the few stocks that appreciated in price were enough to push up the indices, as 30 stocks witnessed share price movement while 45 constituted the losers table.

The All-Share Index, which measures the performance of quoted companies rose by 23.41 points or 0.1 per cent, from 22,995.75 recorded on Monday to 23,019.16, while market capitalisation increased by N5 billion or 0.09 per cent, from N5, 538 trillion to N5,54 trillion.

On the price movement chart, Conoil Nigeria Plc emerged the day's highest price gainer, adding 179 kobo, to close at N37.66 per share. Dangote Flour Mills Plc followed on the list, adding 39 kobo, to close at N12.92 per share. Honey Well Flour Mill Plc, Cadbury Plc, United Bank for Africa Plc, Nigeria Breweries Plc added 36 kobo, 32 kobo, 29 kobo and 26 kobo, to close at N8.13, N15.75, N13.39 and N57.35 per share respectively.

Dangote Sugar Refinery Plc, Guaranty Trust Bank Plc, Unilever Nigeria Plc, Costain West Africa Plc, RT Briscoe Plc, UPL Plc, Capital Hotel Plc, Presco Plc and Nigerian Aviation Handling Company Plc also added 24 kobo, 21 kobo, 19 kobo, 18 kobo, 16 kobo, 15 kobo, 14 kobo, 14 kobo and 12 kobo, to close at N16.55, N18.35, N5.90, N3.02 N5.46 and N8.48 respectively.

On the other hand, African Petroleum Plc topped the day's losers' table with 228 kobo to close at N43.42 per share while UACN Plc followed, shedding 94 kobo, to close at N43.00 per share.

Cement Company of Northern Nigeria Plc, Eternaoil Plc, National Salt Company of Nigeria Plc, SkyeBank Plc, Zenith Bank Plc, EcoBank Plc and Dnmeyer Plc lost 36 kobo, 29 kobo, 29 kobo, 25 kobo, 21 kobo, 20 kobo and 14 kobo, to close at N16.20, N5.71, N6.19, N6.90, N15.98, N6.00 and N2.81 per share respectively.

With transactions exchanged in 3,890 deals, the banking sub-sector remains the most active stock in volume terms with 129.4 million shares, worth N1.3 billion, followed by the insurance sub-sector with 64.2 million units, worth N57.1 million in 664 deals, while the conglomerates sub-sector trailed with 31.3 million shares, worth N224.9 million in 350 deals.

A breakdown of activities in the banking sub-sector showed that the sub-sector was strengthened by activities in the shares of Guaranty Trust Bank Plc, which traded 20.9 million shares, worth N377.5 million in 533 deals, while First Bank of Nigeria Plc followed with 19.2 million units, worth N279.4 million in 920 deals.

Trading in the shares of Continental Reinsurance Plc boosted activities in the insurance sub-sector with 23.7 million shares, worth N23.4 million in 29 deals, while AIICO Insurance Plc followed with 6.2 million units, valued at N5.5 million in 268 deals.

TansNational Incorporated Plc dominated in volume terms in the conglomerates sub-sector with 23.3 million shares, worth N13.2 million in 98 deals.
